Walter Johnson has been challenged by Liberty Middle School to play in our first Powder Puff flag football game! The proceeds from this event will go to 3 special families, including two of our very own here at Walter Johnson. The game will be held here at home on May 22nd and will begin at 4:00pm. Please come on out and support your Jackets!
Breakfast Madness is coming to WJMS on from ! Breakfast will be available in the cafe and outside at the BCPS Food Truck! Breakfast specials include the Basket-Bowl, a tater tot bowl with egg, bacon, and gravy; and a Sunrise Peach Smoothie. Big Dawg 92.1 will be on site to broadcast their show live. The Freedom HS Basketball team will also be hosting fun games for the students that offer a chance to win prizes. Remember, all students can eat breakfast for free, so we invite everyone to get here early and join in on the fun!
Walter Johnson Middle School is proud to participate in the fourth annual Souperintendent’s Souperbowl Canned-Food Drive Jan. 9th through Feb. 6th. The county-wide donations will be distributed to four different local charities: Burke United Christian Ministries, East Burke Christian Ministries, Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church in Rutherford College and the East Burke High School food pantry.
The WJMS Band and Chorus will be putting on a festive concert on Tuesday, December 13th, and everyone is invited! The Band will take the stage at 6:30 to begin the evening, and the Chorus concert will follow at 7:30. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be appreciated. All proceeds will be used to support the Band and Chorus program and to purchase new music. Please come out and show your support for our fantastic students and directors!
Mr. Lowman is spearheading collection efforts to support our firefighters as they fight the devastating wildfires that are currently raging in South Mountain State Park. Drop off any donations in the school office by Wednesday, November 16th, and he will deliver them. Any of the following items would be helpful to the firemen, forest service workers, law enforcement and other volunteers that are working:
Our book fair is now here and will be available through Wednesday, the 16th! Please come see all the great books and items that we have available. It will be open during parent conference days next Monday (until 7:30pm) and Tuesday (until 11:00am) if you wish to browse with your student. Each $10 purchase or donation gets an entry into a drawing where you can win a free book or poster, and there will be multiple winners! A portion of every purchase does help our Media Center, so we thank you for your support!
Several students were able to participate in the NFL PPK competition at Panthers Stadium this past weekend: Emerson M., Jackson C., Malikai L., Scout C., and Morgan S. Malikai placed first in the Boys 12-13 subgroup, and Morgan placed 2nd in the Girls 12-13 group. Malikai is waiting on the results from other Sectionals to find out if he advances to the Panthers Team Championship - Good luck Malikai!
Please join us in our Relay For Life campaign! On October 19th, we will have a Hat Day to raise funds to help support Burke County United Way. Students can pay $1 to their homeroom teacher to wear any school-appropriate hat of their choice for the day! On October 20th, there will be a SWARM Social for students that donate $1 to attend. Students will be free to socialize with their friends. Music will be played and concessions may also be available for purchase. A third opportunity will be a volleyball game on October 31st during SWARM when the WJMS Volleyball team will face off against a team made up of staff members! Student admission will be $1 for this event also. Thank you for helping us support our local community!
On October 15th, the members of our 8th grade band will be performing at the opening of the 29th Annual Freedom Classic at Freedom High School. They will be performing The Star-Spangled Banner with members of the Table Rock Middle School band. Come out and support our students!
Our Fall fundraiser kicked off Friday with sales of tumblers and gourmet peanuts! Each student should have brought home a packet of information on Friday. The tumblers are 24 oz, dishwasher and microwave safe, and they come in numerous styles and designs, including a custom WJMS offering! Parents, you may register your students and offer online sales also. Visit the Great American School Store to quickly set up an account and share over 1,500 items with your friends and family! Additionally, students can return the postcard booklets which are due Tuesday to win a prize.
